The Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, who kicked off his visit to Montenegro with a tour of a key project co-financed by the EU, SS Lastva, was welcomed on behalf of CGES by Aleksandar Mijušković, the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Leda Minić, the Director of Elektroprenos, while the presentation entitled Montenegro's section of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor was given by Dragan Perunović, the Director of Sector for development and investments.

Mijušković warmly greeted the Commisioner for Neigbourhood and Enlargement, Mr Oliver Varhelyi, emphasising the importance of this energy facility as well as the importance of investing in the electricity transmission network. The Lastva substation is a key component of Montenegro's section of the Trans-Balkan Electricity Corridor, in which the EU has invested around 120 million in grants and favourable loans. Energy security and sustainable energy generation from renewable sources are clear targets of our EU energy policy. The substation visited today is an important example and part of a much bigger picture supported by institutions and EU Member States through Team Europe approach,” Commissioner Varhelyi said.

The Commissioner voiced the EU’s support for Montenegro’s commitment to further strengthen the national power network.

“The EU expects the Government of Montenegro to proceed quickly to adopt the spatial plan that will allow completion of the domestic grid, and to link up with the Serbian grid by 2027,” Varhelyi said.

Commissioner Varhelyi highlighted the longstanding support that the EU provides to Montenegro in terms of capacity building and investments in the energy and environment sectors, confirming the EU’s commitment to provide assistance through the accession process and beyond.
