Laying of submarine power cable between Italy and Montenegro in the Montenegrin submarine area from the cape Jaz towards Italy was completed yesterday. Once the entire project is completed, Montenegro will be in the centre of power flows, thus connecting itself with the power system of Italy and Western Europe and becoming a power link between Western Balkans and European Union (EU).
Laying of 157 km cable, on the Montenegrin side, was performed faster than planned, and the last meters of the cable were laid yesterday about 13h.
Laying of submarine cable on the Montenegrin side began on 20th November. The cable was laid from the ship “Skarerrak”- Norway Company “Neksans”, which is specialized in cable laying.
The submarine cable in the total length from Peskara and the cape Jaz of 455 km consists of three parts. At the beginning of the last year the company Terna had already laid 136 km cable from the Italian coast, and after completion of the laying on the Montenegrin side, the laying of cable route, which will connect these two parts of the cable, will begin in January next year.
Terna plans to lay the entire submarine cable between Italy and Montenegro at the beginning of next year, while the entire project of power connection should be completed at the end of 2018.
Works have been performed at the bottom of the Adriatic Sea at a depth reaching even 1.200 m, with nominal transmission capacity of direct current of 1.000 megawatt (MW). Laying of the inland part of the cable on the Montenegrin side began in early October, in the length of about 6 km from the cape Jaz to the substation “Lastva”. In early August the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism issued a building permit to Terna Montenegro for laying the submarine power cable from Italy to Montenegro through the Montenegrin territory.
