CGES AND CZIP CONTINUE TO SUCCESSFULLY COOPERATE IN NATURE PROTECTION

Celebration of European Week of Bird Observation in Ćemovsko Field

For the second year in a row Montenegrin Electricity Transmission System (Crnogorski elektroprenosni sistem - CGES) and Centre for Bird Protection and Research (Centar za zaštitu i proučavanje ptica - CZIP) have continued to successfully cooperate in adjusting electricity transmission system to environmentally acceptable conditions for bird nesting, particularly the endangered vultures.

The adjusting of electricity transmission system began after memorandum of cooperation had been signed by setting up 30 houses for nesting of peregrine falcon on towers of high voltage overhead lines, where such an intervention was technically feasible.

Specially designed and constructed houses were set up far from rocks and traditional places in which this species nests. The same practice will be applied this year, when is planned to set up additional 20 houses which would represent support to recover population of all falcon species in Montenegro, as well as some species of owls. Additionally, commencement of monitoring over successfulness of nesting in previously installed houses is planned.

Setting up of new houses is planned in the first weekend of October at the time of celebrating European Week of Bird Observation, when millions of migratory birds abandon Europe and fly towards their winter resorts in Africa. The presence of sustainable nesting areas towards the north, resort preservation, migration safety and appropriate habitats in the areas of winter resorts are of vital importance for migratory bird species.
